To Arthur!

Last Thursday, 24th September 2009, was an amazing holiday of a new saint. Well it wasn't really a holiday, and technically there was no saint involved. Actually, it was more of a completely fabricated idea created by the brilliant advertising machine, Diageo, that was executed with such military precision that at no point was this new "holiday" questioned.

Not complaining though, I had a great time. On my way in to the festivities I saw Eamon Dunphy having just been married getting his photo taken with all the bridesmaids, saw a top drawer band busking at the top of Grafton Street and then the evening was set up even more through a brilliant example of "Arthurs Day".

It appeared that somewhere near or around Bruxelles, if it wasn't Bruxelles, was on fire. With this, two fire engines, two ambulances and another fire engine shot up Grafton Street dividing the late night shopping crowd in half and made their way to the smokey source. However, instead of being greeted with a sense of emergency, a sense of "uh oh, what is wrong? am I in danger?", the newly accumulated crowd in the smokey surroundings of Bruxelles, simply turned to the emergency crews, launched their pints into the air and echoed, "To Arthur!".

The threat of buildings burning down around them wasn't going to ruin a night of cheap pints on a holiday we made up. Brilliant!

To whole idea was cleverly summed up when an Arthurs day cohort turned to me, laughing with their pint in hand and said,

" ha, what are we like? 'St. Patricks day is too far away, so lets just make up a day!' waaaay! "
